Aim: The purpose of this module is to provide students with knowledge and skills required by small business entity owners/operators to successfully navigate the NZ small business environment and its’ legal and regulatory requirements.   

In this introductory unit, will focus on the NZ small business landscape, ethical, social and culturally inclusive norms applicable in such business environment. It will also look more closely at small business entities and a range of business structures existing in NZ and trading regulations such as Financial responsibilities, Advertising, Pricing, Fair Trade, Consumer Guarantee Act as well as New Zealand Employment Laws and considerations- Insurance, Contracts, Minimum wage, Leave and Sick Pay, Dismissal, Discrimination, etc. 

Students will also discover the fundamentals of administrative processes and technological devices, software and applications required by a small business entity in NZ. 


Aim: In this module students discover the importance of market analysis and strategy planning in order to provide a sense of direction and outline measurable goals for a small business. These guide day-to-day decisions and also enable students to evaluate progress and changing approaches when moving forward. 

To do this, students will learn how to collect and analyse a range of information about your business (SWAT/PESTLE Analysis) - both about how it operates internally and about how conditions are developing in a given market; set short-, mid- and long-term goals, and what technology options to use to conduct market analysis (e.g. Survey Monkey, Microsoft Forms, etc.) 


Aim: The purpose of this module is to prepare students to manage a specific small business entity in the application and knowledge effective communication skills in a bi and multi-cultural environment to meet trading and competitive relationships for products and service to potential customers 

This unit deals with developing marketing strategies designed to help achieve business objectives and build competitive advantage. Students will learn how to reach out to customers, conduct market research, forecast potential sales opportunities, and develop a marketing plan. In turn, the marketing plan will outline the actions that must be carried out in order to persuade consumers to purchase the products and services a business offers. This plan can be part of the business plan or a stand-alone document. 


Aim:  In this Module, students will explore a range of communication skills necessary to succeed in a business world. These will include verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills appropriate in the business context. Role-plays and realistic scenarios will be used to assess students’ communication skills. To ensure these are appropriate, external stakeholders will be invited to participate/ observe the assessment tasks. 

Aim:  In this Module, students will explore a range of technology solutions and resources necessary to succeed in a business world. Communicate, collaborate, and share, using several digital platforms and technologies on a project while working in a team using (Office 365, OneDrive, Teams, SKYPE, Zoom and various desktop publishing web-based applications).  Students will examine the application of ethical behaviour and the implementation of security solutions. They will practice implementing security solutions on their course device. 

 The module will then look at troubleshooting common problems associated with hardware and software and explore the possible remedies to these issues. The learner will research, test, and communicate resolutions to common hardware and software via their course device. 


Aim:  The purpose of this module is to prepare students to manage a range of financial considerations for the success of a small business entity with the competitive market place to sustain and growth for the business operational and effectiveness. 

Aim:  The purpose of this module is to focus on effective Human Resource Management to create a workplace culture and environment that allows for the smooth operation and success of a small business. Students will learn will how to deal with issues related to recruitment, performance management, employee motivation, organization development, safety, wellness, benefits, etc.  

Aim:  The purpose of this module is to understand the importance and elements of a business continuity plan as well as being ready for anything unusual or unexpected that has the potential to disrupt business operations.  Disruptions such as equipment failure, or external events like COVID-19 or an earthquake. Students will develop a business continuity plan that outlines the most important parts of your business, identifies potential risks to these critical pieces and create solutions for business owners to recover as quick and easy as possible.
